DESTINATIONS

2. Varanasi:

Benaras

This is India in a nutshell. Religion is the core of this city. You can sense it in the bustling streets, narrow bylanes, riverside, everywhere. Varanasi (or Benaras) is as old a city as it gets. A huge city, by all means, and a tourist destination of choice. More foreigners can be seen precariously perched on the rickshaws of this city than maybe walking in the streets of Paris. Yet over the packed roads and buzzing markets hangs a strange, warm rusticness.
Rickshaws are the transport of choice because it is better to get off and walk past the squares than to be stuck into the traffic till eternity(That, if you don't mind sitting in a gravity-defying posture). When in Varanasi, you can't miss one fact-traffic sense of people here is unique. At the same time, keep a watch-out for gaping manholes.
Inspite of this (or because of it?)there is a lot to see in this city with an old world charm which is difficult to describe .And  more than to see it is to feel the history and culture of this old city that hangs heavy and thick in the wafting evening smoke.
So , one of these years, prepare yourself and visit Benaras.

3.Shillong:

Not going to Switzerland this year? O.k., go Shillong, instead!
Whoever named this state 'Meghalaya (abode of clouds)' was going UMIUM LAKE easy on his imagination. The place is thick with stray clouds. They will enter and leave your room at their own will. For six of us who went to Shillong for our summers in 1994, it is a lasting memory. None of the photographs could capture the true hazy beauty of this place. And be sure to visit Cherrapunji if u are here.Cherrapunji is of course the place that receives highest annual rainfall in the world. the panoramic view of planes of Bangladesh from here are breathtaking. The road from Shillong to Cherrapunji is a visual treat.
It rains here, period. The whole state of Meghalaya is lush green . People armed with their umbrellas seem quite unmindful of the continual rains. On a clear day the whole place looks a huge washing line , with clothes of all colours competing for the scant sun .And don't forget to take a boat ride in the Umiam lake(The photo on the left). The photo on the right is not Shillong actually, nor even Meghalaya, but it should give you a very fair idea of what to expect here on a june evening.
Note:Before you start packing your baggage, check out the law-and-order situation (terrorism) in the North-East India.
