The Synthasizer Applet is based on the latest releases of Java Media API and you should regard it as a beta software ( The possibility of it's hanging during loading can't be ruled out .).However,it is quite interesting in its capabilities and can transform a computer into a full-fledged synthasizer.
You can hear a sample midi file generated on it Here(The person who made it is no great musician ,though :-) ).However, as this is an applet, you will not be able to record any sound from it.(Java imposes severe restrictions about file access to enforce security .)
You will need java 1.3 plug in to view this Applet .If you don't have the requisite plugin you will be automatically directed to The windows version of the plugin from SUN. However, if you are using any other platform, then you can find appropriate plugins at- http://java.sun.com/products/plugin
